Soloist: SongYi Choi

Mozart - Clarinet Concerto

Reuben Brown - Conductor:

Hailing from the depths of the South Island, Reuben Brown has recently completed his Honours degree at Te Koki - New Zealand School of Music. Here, Reuben has pursued his passions for orchestral conducting and euphonium performance under the tutelage of Associate Professor Martin Riseley and euphonium artist Byron ‘Buzz’ Newton. He is now the Artistic Coordinator at Te Tira Puoro o Aotearoa - New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, assisting in current and future projects. Beginning in strong brass banding communities, Reuben has climbed the ranks with his playing and conducting, landing a euphonium seat with New Zealand’s premiere Wellington Brass Band. In 2021, he became the Band Manager and Assistant Musical Director (under David Bremner). Reuben has also been a member of the National Youth Brass Band since 2020 with both performance and administrative duties. He has recently been announced as the Assistant Musical Director for the National Secondary Schools’ Brass Band for 2022/23. In 2022, he successfully applied for and was awarded an NZSO’s Conducting Fellowship, working with the orchestra over sessions lead by Hamish McKeich and various visiting conductors.

Soloist: SongYi Choi

Clarinetist SongYi Choi has been playing the clarinet since she was 11 years old. She learned to play the piano and cello before taking up the clarinet, but her love for the clarinet's sound led her to choose it as her instrument.

Choi received several awards during her youth in Korea and later gained admission to Kaywon High School of Arts, one of the renowned art schools in the country. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music from Ewha Womans University in 2008 and pursued further studies at the same institution, earning her Master of Music in 2011. She served as the first clarinettist in the Ewha Philharmonic Orchestra and collaborated with pianist Aviram Reichert to celebrate Rachmaninoff’s 140th birthday. Additionally, she co-founded a woodwind quintet, performing various pieces at different venues.

In 2018, Choi relocated from Korea to Dunedin, New Zealand, becoming the first clarinettist in the Dunedin Collegiate Orchestra. And
the member of Dunedin Symphony Orchestra at 2021.
Since moving to Palmerston North in 2021, she has been an active participant in the Manawatu Sinfonia Orchestra.

Besides her performances, Choi has been a dedicated music educator. She has provided private clarinet lessons to students in both New Zealand and Korea and previously worked as an orchestra teacher in primary and intermediate schools in Korea.
